Stump Grinding

Below grade, ready to replant.

Stump Grinding

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard, a lawn mower obstacle, and an open invitation for carpenter ants and fungal infection that can spread to neighboring trees. Cedar & Oak grinds stumps 6–8 inches below grade — deep enough to re-seed, lay sod, or plant over without the stump ghosting through your lawn two years later.

The chips produced by grinding can be left on-site for use as mulch (they make excellent ring mulch for nearby trees) or hauled away with the truck. Most residential stumps are completed in under an hour. We can grind standalone or as part of a removal package for a bundled rate.

  • Ground 6–8" below grade — deep enough to replant or lay sod

Common questions

Do you need to treat the area after grinding?
Generally no. Once the stump is ground below grade the remaining root system will decompose naturally over a few years. If you're replanting in the exact spot, we recommend waiting a season or mixing the chip fill with fresh topsoil to improve establishment.
Can you grind stumps near my irrigation system or buried utilities?
Yes, with care. We ask you to mark any known irrigation lines or underground utilities in the work area before we arrive. We can work around marked lines and we always call 811 for public utility locates on any job where grinding extends past the lawn surface.
